Event Report: FAD KL January 2012

On 28th January 2012, Fedora Malaysia, along with the folks from UCTI FOSS Special Interest Group, organized our second barcamp-styled mini FUDCon. Just like the last year, it was hosted at APIIT/UCTI. Our initial number of registrants were 28, however only 20 attendees turned up during the day.

The event opened doors at 10:00, and the first session started around 11:15. The first session and an introduction to FOSS Software was started by none other than Izhar Firdaus, a.k.a KageSenshi, and the topic being; "What is FOSS?". The first session was aimed at new comers to UCTI FOSS SIG so that they understand what Free & Open Source Software meant, and a refresher to those who have heard about FOSS as well.

We managed to hold 7 sessions altogether. Topics ranging from Fedora, FOSS to how/why it is important for students to adopt FOSS/Fedora. The sessions given were as follows; "What is FOSS?", "Contributing to Fedora", "Fedora Freemedia Program" - a talk and a discussion about Freemedia, "Me and Fedora", "Leap of #FAIF: Why Free Software Matters", "AppRepo: Finding Linux Apps made easy" and lastly about the discussion for our Malaysia APAC "FUDCon" bidding. For the "FUDCon" sessions, we discussed about dividing roles and what issues/things/stuffs should be solved/made before and during the FUDCon, if we were to win the bid and host FUDCon here in APIIT/UCTI, Malaysia.

The session ended around 17:00, although some of us stayed around until 18:00 to talk about Fedora and sharing some tips & tricks that some of us may have missed. And as the venue was only available until 18:00, those of us that stayed behind until 18:00 parted ways around 18:15.

We will probably be having another FAD, this year 2012, just haven't set any date yet. So, please do keep an eye on our Fedora.my Blog and Fedora.my Events Page for further announcements. The photos for this FAD is available at our resident photographer/Fedora user - Muhd Syazwan Md Khusaini's FADKL January 2012 album and our IRC #fedora-my resident Meng Shen Lim's FADKL 2012 Photo Set.

On 10th September 2011, Fedora Malaysia organized our first barcamp style FUDCon. Hosted at UCTI/APIIT, we managed to get 65 registrants, however only 28 attendees turn up during the day.

The event opened doors on 9:00, and the first session started on 11:00, with an introductory session led Izhar Firdaus (KageSenshi) , where our sponsors, UCTI/APIIT, Abyres, and Red Hat are given some time to pitch about their companies and about FOSS. Those who are going to hold a session were also given 2 minutes time to pitch about their talks.

We manage to hold 5 talk sessions (Research paper writing in Fedora, Fedora cloud and virtualization initiative, Making the plunge from proprietary to FOSS, GNOME3 shell extensions, and Mozilla in Fedora), 1 workshop session (Composing your next music hit album on Fedora), and 2 discussion sessions (Team activity for fun & profit, Fedora Malaysia : Moving forward). The day ended at around 5:30pm.

We will be doing another FAD early next year, hopefully around either January or February, so those who are in Malaysia during those months, keep an eye for our announcements later.

Photos are uploaded here. To attendees who have taken photos and would like to archive it here, please send a link to your photos to izhar@fedoraproject.org.
